Somerset County Tourism
Somerset County is an area rich in Eastern Shore and Maryland history, boasting more historic buildings and sites per capita than any other county in Maryland. Vividly reflecting the past is a wealth of surviving eighteenth and nineteenth century plantation, farm and town dwellings, churches and agricultural buildings. Established in 1666 by Cecil Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore, Somerset County was named in honor of his wife's sister, Lady Mary Somerset. As originally conceived, Somerset County stretched from the bayside to the seaside and from the Virginia line to the Nanticoke River, encompassing what is now the three lower Shore counties as well as a part of southern Delaware. Seventy-six years after its original creation, Somerset was divided in half, with the seaboard side established as Worcester County in 1742. Princess Anne, founded in 1733, was declared the new county seat of Somerset in 1744. In 1867 a portion of Somerset and a section of Worcester County were partitioned to create Wicomico County. The shared history of the three lower Shore counties offers an interesting background for the modern day pilgrim to explore Somerset county with its level fields, extensive marshes and miles of slow moving tidal tributaries emptying into Chesapeake Bay.

The Spiceland Preservation and Tourism Society had its beginnings on April 24, 1997, when Richard P. Ratcliff called a meeting in the town council chamber of those persons interested in the future of the community and those willing to work to preserve Spiceland's historic past. Twenty-seven residents were in attendance. The Society was incorporated by the State of Indiana on July 2, 1997. SPATS received its not-for-profit status from the IRS on April 3, 1998; therefore, contributions to the organization are tax deductible. The Society has at present 175 members who pay annual dues of $10.00. Those who donate $1,000 or more to SPATS are exempt from the annual dues requirement. The Society's Mission is: To provide the community the climate and opportunities necessary to develop tourism and to promote the restoration, utilization and preservation of many of our historically significant structures, noteworthy sites and the community in general. To inform and educate the public on the need and value of historic preservation and the impact it can have on improving the quality of life in the community. To work to promote a spirit of cooperation among the citizenry as projects are being considered and implemented. Mrs. O'Bannon's Visit to Spiceland to kickoff the Millennium Project. Currently SPATS is involved in the renovation of Hoover Hall, a building that will provide the citizens of the Spiceland area with a facility that will serve as a community center and museum. The Hoover building was purchased for $30,000 from Mrs. Jan Stockton, of the former Oliver C. Steele Manufacturing Co. Real estate adjacent to the building was given to SPATS in 1997 and in 1998 by the Spiceland Lions Club, The Town of Spiceland and the Citizens State Bank. Donations from patrons, income from SPATS fund raising activities, a grant of $20,000 from the State of Indiana Building Indiana Fund and a Federal Community Focus Grant of $475,000 allowed renovation to begin in 1999.

Talbot County Office of Tourism
THE TALBOT COUNTY OFFICE OF TOURISM JAMES MICHENER’S CHESAPEAKE Talbot County, Maryland….Spanning over 300 years, Michener’s Chesapeake follows the lives and fortunes of four families who both shaped and were shaped by the Eastern Shore. The village of Patamoke is a composite of several towns in the area, but the Choptank River and other sites are authentic. Spend a day tracing the real footsteps of James Michener and the fictional ones of the “Turlocks, Steeds, Paxmores and Caters”. Easton: The original manuscript for the novel is kept at the Talbot County Free Library, 100 West Dover Street. It’s not on public display, but the Maryland Room, where Michener did much of his research, is open during the library’s normal hours, Monday 9-9, Tuesday/Wednesday 9-6, Thursday/Friday 9-5 and Saturday 9-1. (Open until 9 on Thursday’s and 5 on Saturdays in the summer.) Closed on Sundays. The Third Haven Meeting House mentioned as the place the Quaker family Paxmore worshipped is located at 405 South Washington Street. It’s the oldest religious building in continuous use in the country. Oxford: Michener wrote the original outline for the novel in the tavern of the Robert Morris Inn. He frequently ate there, and declared more than once that the crab cakes served at the Inn were the best on the Eastern Shore. Stop at Cutts and Case Shipyard to see Byeberry, the oldest house in Oxford, possibly dating to 1668, as well as several other historic homes. Visitors can watch workers build elegant wood yachts, combining traditional materials with state-of-the-art engineering and design. Cross the Tred Avon River via the Oxford/Bellevue Ferry and head for the Jean Ellen duPont Shehan Audubon Sanctuary. Use the nature trails to get close to the herons, osprey, deer, geese and other creatures so loved by Michener and his characters. From there, continue to Tilghman Island. This waterman community is home to the Skipjacks, the Retrievers and the independent people who are more at home on the Bay than on its shores. Continue through town to Black Walnut Point. Park in the lot at the end of the road by the radar station and amble through the refuge, maintained by the Department of Natural Resources. It’s open 8am until 5pm daily. The view east across the Choptank River includes the spot where the fictional Devon Island was located. Returning through Tilghman Island, stop to see (and even cruise on) the Skipjack Rebecca T Ruark, the oldest Skipjack on the Bay, at Dogwood harbor. The “Rebecca” has a schedule of cruises throughout the year. St. Michaels is another town that was incorporated into Patamoke. This town actually was bombarded one early morning during the War of 1812. But the wily locals hung lanterns in the trees, so the British aimed too high and mostly missed the buildings. Only the Cannonball House on Green Street was hit. The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is the perfect place to see log canoes and other wooden boats that played such a vital role in the life on the Bay. There is always a vessel under construction in the Boat Building Shed. Buy Boats, like Mr. Jim, were used to circuit the Bay and purchase the day’s catch from the watermen. These boats carried their purchases into port while allowing watermen the opportunity to continue with their harvest. The Museum’s efforts to save the remaining working Skipjacks helped to earn one of the National Trust For Historic Preservation’s Eleven Most Endangered Places for 2002. The Skipjack Rosie Parks is docked at the Museum, while the E.C. Collier is the focal point of the display called “Oystering on the Chesapeake,” which demonstrates the hard work of harvesting the bivalves. In town, the H. M. Krentz takes passengers on daily and sunset cruises in season. Leaving St Michaels, look for Railroad Avenue. Michener lived in a house at the end of this street while working on Chesapeake. The Choptank River is as much a character in the novel as any of the people. Spend some time with it by visiting the fishing pier off Route 50. It’s a good place to have a picnic while appreciating the wide river. It’s a good place to contemplate the saga of the Chesapeake and its people. Greetings! .. and welcome to limestone country. With man-made and natural wonders, Lawrence County, Indiana is known as the 'limestone capital of the world' and the center of Hoosier Heartland. Located between Southern Indiana's recreational playgrounds...to the north - Lake Monroe; to the south - Patoka Lake, Paoli Peaks and the French Lick-West Baden resort area. Intriguing limestone mills and quarries are surrounded by scenic hills and natural marvels. Browse our site for attractions, lodging, shopping, dining and many recreational opportunities to enjoy. Indiana Limestone and the Early Men of History - Generations of southern Indiana men have lived in limestone houses, worshipped in limestone churches, dulled their hearing with the noise of limestone fabricating mills, filled their lungs with the gray , gritty dust and finally marked one another's grave with beautiful, art carved limestone markers. Yet, few residents in the heart of the stone belt realize the wealth and the beauty that the limestone industry has brought to Lawrence County. This product ,which is so abundant in this area, is known by several names: Indiana or Bedford Stone - for marketing purposes. Salem - for its geological formation. Oolitic - for its composition. The town of Oolitic owes its name to the material which is made up of "Oolites". The area of production is known as the "Stone Belt". This belt extends northward to Putnam County and southward through Owen, Monroe, Lawrence, Washington, Orange, and Crawford Counties. Historian, E.Y. Gernsey, believed that the first use of Indiana limestone was lintels of the old Bullett Mill in Spring Mill State Park, erected about 1816 and the foundation of the Dr. Winthrope Foote home, site of the old Greystone Hotel. Stone in Indiana was first used for foundations and window sills. In the early years, America did not use stone as a building material for there was a need to clear the land; therefore, they chopped trees to build their homes. In England, stone was used - field stone. Clay was available in most areas for brick. In some places where there was stone, there was no lime for mortar. The first person to realize the value of the stone in Lawrence County was Dr. Winthrope Foote, a native of Connecticut, born in 1787. He came to Lawrence County in 1816 and located at Palestine near White River. He later moved to Bedford when the people abandoned Palestine. He once predicted that limestone from the "Blue Hole" would someday be shipped to New York and all over the world. This prediction was before the railroad came as a means for transporting the stone. Although stone is shipped all over the world, the east is still the strongest market. A good example of early stone work is Dr. Foote's Tomb, a vault carved out of a huge bolder. Limestone became popular as a building product just after the big Chicago fire. The buildings that were made of limestone were still standing after the fire. The years before 1884 were indeed a pioneering era for Indiana limestone. In those early days, work was crude to the extreme and production was limited. Almost everything marketed in the first years was hand produced and the market was almost all local. Stone was "quarried" by blasting it out of a bluff with black powder. Three or four inch diameter powder holes were drilled by hand, going as deep as 20 ft., with long iron drills. Later, as a "ledge" was beginning to take shape, drillers place holes in rows, filled them with black powder and "blasted" a cut. A couple of blasts might last a small mill a year. In 1863, G.J. Wardwell, a New Englander, invented a channel cutting machine and the device was soon introduced to local quarries There were 21 quarried in the district and about 600 men employed in Bedford. Soon after, hand operations throughout the industry ended. Better power driven, automatic machinery, lightened and enriched the laboring man's life. Steam channelers, steam derricks, steam drills and pumps came into existence. The great depression, more than any other incident, hurt the stone industry most. The use of steel, a less expensive item than the huge limestone blocks, dealt quite a blow. So called blue stone was most valuable and highly prized in those early days and stone with a blue cast was quarried in preference to other shades. The famous Biltmore Mansion in North Carolina is an example of the blue stone, quarried from the Dark Hole Quarry. In today's market, the buff color is most desirable. Wire saws came into use in the 1890's. The wire was not tough enough to stand under abrasive action and tension could not be maintained to make true and even cuts. By World War II, they were an uncommon sight and now the modern diamond saws are used to cut stone. John R. Rowe's Monumental Works was operated in 1897 and his company specialized in "rustic" stone carvings - sculpturing trees, logs, etc., complete with bark, rings and limbs for garden and grave monuments. He supplied some 15 monuments for the Chicamauga Battleground Memorial near Chattanooga, TN. He entered into partnership with Ferdinand O. Cross of Chicago. It was Cross and Rowe who were said to have entered carvings in the 1883 World's Fair at Chicago. Thus, carvings became popular. Examples of rustic tree trunk carvings and other art carvings can be found in local cemeteries and yard ornaments. All mills in the district had their own cutters and carvers - cut stone workers, men who transformed quarried stone into architectural ornament and statuary. A cutter cuts two-dimensional ornament and a carver is one who sculptures ornate three-dimensional objects. Some of the most famous buildings constructed with Indiana limestone are as follows: The Empire State Building in New York, the Tribune Tower in Chicago, the Pentagon and the National Cathedral in Washington DC. Thirty-five of the state capitol buildings are made of Indiana limestone and a varied number of other famous building throughout the country. Limestone has made a comeback from depression times and is recognized as a long lasting, durable product. Generations of southern Indiana men have lived in limestone houses, worshipped in limestone churches, dulled their hearing with the noise of limestone fabricating mills, filled their lungs with the gray , gritty dust and finally marked one another's grave with beautiful, art carved limestone markers. Yet, few residents in the heart of the stone belt realize the wealth and the beauty that the limestone industry has brought to Lawrence County.

It's still possible to come face-to-face with magnificent creatures of the wild and relive the travails of our somewhat turbulent history...while for hardy adventurers, the challenges of nature await in all their pristine glory. Our rich, multi-cultural heritage may well be a product of the past, but it's created a wealth of meaningful, unforgettable experiences to be absorbed and enjoyed in the present. On the other hand, there's always global culture to pursue... that 'shop-till-you-drop' buzz for mall-cruisers, fine cuisine for gourmets and all-night raving for dedicated hedonists. Theatre-buffs can thrill to the fresh, dynamic vision of our stage companies... concert-goers to the innovative fusion of traditional and modern composers...and sports fanatics to the electrifying atmosphere of our international-class stadiums filled with zealous, yet knowledgeable supporters. The intricate workings of Africa's busiest harbour and the world's largest export coal terminal are guaranteed highlights for inquisitive minds...as are the groundbreaking discoveries of our scientists and academics. Pin-striped captains of industry and commerce regularly rely on the ideal ambience of our convention and conference facilities to arrive at their pivotal, far-reaching decisions. In addition to two World Heritage Sites, then, and beyond Beach, Bush, Battlefields and Berg mountains...our Kingdom of the Zulu positively oozes Buzz. Boredom? Not here! A brief introduction to the history of KwaZulu-Natal A Past in Glowing Colours of Today As far from the dry chronicling of distant, long-forgotten events as any well-travelled voyager could hope to encounter, the history of our Kingdom offers a panorama of unforgettable experiences - a living Buzz that permeates every quarter of this spectacularly beautiful terrain where the mighty Zulu nation was forged. zoom Preserved for future generations within our youngest World Heritage Site, vivid rock-paintings highlight the Berg mountain fastness of our western boundary, bringing to life the fascinating inner and outer worlds of the truly ancient San people who first enjoyed the bounties of this subtropical paradise. The endless golden Beach of our eastern shoreline, landmark for historic explorer Vasco da Gama and the pirates who once traversed warm Indian Ocean currents with impunity, offers shipwrecks and million-year-old fossil beds to explore, plus the opportunity to re- trace the footprints of marooned mariners who sought refuge here. Our coastal World Heritage Site in Zululand further presents the extraordinarily rare chance to encounter living fossils of the deep coelacanths. Admittedly, the odds in favour might not be great, but videotaped documentary evidence of such close-ups with pre- dawn history does in fact exist! To the north lie our memory-filled and intensely atmospheric Battlefields, scenes of valour and supreme sacrifice where one can stand and reflect at the exact spots where Zulu warrior, Boer guerilla and British redcoat fell during the epic three-way struggle of our formative epoch. The annals of our Kingdom refer to its southernmost reaches as No- man's Land - today an exquisite wilderness of former frontier territory where the visitor can recall, with great ease, days of clandestine gun-running and contraband smuggling. Linking these compass points is the inimitable Bush, where history was made in wildlife conservation on the African continent - leading to our unsurpassable collection of game-parks and reserves and where the proud Zulu people rose in unity following migration of clans from the Great Lakes. Relive the campaigns of Africa's Black Napoleon - King Shaka - and trace the lineage of monarchs from Colonial subjugation through the Apartheid Years to present-day democracy. Our multicultural society bears witness to the successful Liberation Struggle that captured world headlines for decades, and one can walk in the footsteps of towering figures from Nelson Mandela to Mohandas Gandhi. The Mahatma-to-be left an indelible imprint on our Indian population, who arrived from the subcontinent with an epic history of their own, sustained and nurtured to a flowering that today offers the visitor a vast array of fascinating, insightful experiences. Welcome, then, to our Kingdom where East meets West in the palm of the proud Zulu people, and history speaks out at every turn not in prosaic monotones, but poetic and rainbow-hued language that beckons with the promise of a lifetime's memories of unique adventures amid natural splendour par none.
Tourism Directory-Adventure Tourism in Queenstown New Zealand
Visitors have been flocking to Queenstown since the 1860's when gold was first discovered in the Shotover River. When the gold finally ran out some years later many of those early prospectors decided to stay; captivated by the beauty of the surrounding mountains and rivers. Around the turn of the century, it was the area's many walking trails and tracks which first created the early beginnings of the tourism industry. Visitors would travel from throughout New Zealand and indeed other parts of the world during the summer months to experience the magnificent walks which have become famous in their own right including the Milford, the Routeburn and the Hollyford Tracks. In winter though, Queenstown virtually came to a standstill as locals hibernated until the start of the summer walking season. In the early 1950's the Mount Cook Group developed the nearby Coronet Peak Ski Area into a commercial ski field allowing Queenstown to become a year round resort. Rather than closing down for the winter season skiers flocked to the town creating new development and the construction of several new hotels. Queenstown's first real taste of Adventure Tourism came in 1970 with the establishment of commercial jet boating. The jet boat, a New Zealand invention, had been developed by a South Island high country farmer by the name of Bill Hamilton who had long been prevented from accessing many areas of his property due to the shallow rivers. The extensive maneuverability of the boat and its ability to travel in less than 3cm of water allowed for obvious commercial applications to be developed in a place like Queenstown and before long Shotover Jet had established a thrilling ride taking visitors through the spectacular canyons on the Shotover River. White Water Rafting was to follow quickly on the heels of the success of jet boating. The two nearby rivers the Shotover and the Kawarau were ideal for giving visitors a taste of the thrills and spills of this new activity and it wasn't long before new operators were scrambling to keep up with the demand. But it was in 1988 with the arrival in town of two entrepreneurs by the name of AJ Hackett and Henry Van Asch that Queenstown was forever to be branded as the 'world's Adventure Capital'. The pair had spent two years working with the University of Auckland developing a special cord made up entirely of individual rubber strands which, when attached to the ankles, could be used to bungy jump from a fixed platform. They originally got the idea from watching native tribes in Papua New Guinea who used forest vines to leap from man made towers, often with tragic consequences. AJ had some months before received world wide publicity with his daring jump in the early hours of the morning from the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Now, their plan was to use the historic Kawarau Bridge (43m above the river) on the outskirts of Queenstown as the location for the world's first ever commercial bungy jumping site. Many locals were sceptical of the venture, believing that the activity would last only a few months before folding. However, it wasn't long before visitors were flocking to Queenstown in their thousands to experience this newest of adventure activities which everyone was talking about ... and so the bungy phenomenon was born! A year later the company developed a second site at the Skippers Bridge (87m above river level) to keep up with demand for the product followed by the opening of a third site 'The Ledge' at the top of Bobs Peak in 1997. It is estimated that more than 350,000 visitors have bungy jumped in Queenstown since that first commercial jump in 1988. For approximately two years AJ Hackett operated heli bungy in Queenstown offering visitors the chance to jump from a helicopter hovering more than 450m above the ground. Unfortunately, the license to operate this product was subsequently revoked by the New Zealand Civil Aviation Department following a change in their policy regarding such activities. It is hoped to re-establish, what was a very popular product, in the future. The wave of interest in bungy jumping was to create an environment for a host of other activity operators to follow in the wake of the bungy phenomenon and cash in on this new wave of what had been dubbed 'adventure tourism'. Tandem Parapenting was another activity to be pioneered in Queenstown by the late Bruce Grant. This involved attaching the passenger to the 'pilot' with them running off the edge of a mountain side with the wing (canopy) of the parapente rising above to create a sensation almost like a bird gliding to earth. [Bruce was later to be tragically killed in 1995 while climbing K2 in Pakistan] Tandem skydiving, tandem hang gliding, river surfing, parasailing, canyoning, abseiling were all to follow. In July 1999 AJ Hackett opened its newest site 'The Nevis' located at Nevis Bluff, close to its existing Kawarau Bridge operation. This latest venture will involve visitors jumping from a platform suspended from overhead cables and positioned more than 135m above the river below making this now the highest commercial bungy jump from a fixed structure in New Zealand. Queenstown will continue to find ways to challenge the adventurous. Its a place inextricably linked to adventure tourism ... a place that has well and truly earned its reputation as the world's Adventure Capital!

The Republic of Moldova is a small country, favorably situated in the Southeast part of Europe, neighboring Romania to the West and Ukraine to the East. This piece of land boasts a rich history, abundant in dramatic and agitated events. From the XIV century it was a part of the Moldova Principality, situated between Oriental Carpathians and the Nistru river, in the north bounded by Hotin, and in the South – by the Low Danube and the Black Sea. Following the Peace concluded in Bucharest, in 1812, a part of this territory was asigned to Czarist Russia, which called it Basarabia - an older name, earlier attributed to the southern part. The aim was to identify this territory as a separate geographic entity from the Moldova Principality. The Independence of the Democratic Republic of Moldova was proclaimed in January 1918. And later, on March 27 1918 it was decided to re-unite it with Romania. The next annexure process took place in 1940, following the Molotov - Ribbentrop summit. According to this Basarabia became part of the USSR and was proclaimed as the Soviet Socialist Republic of Moldavia. It comprised only nine Basarabian counties and six districts from the left bank of the Nistru River. The present territory of Moldova is smaller compared to the area attributed to Russian authorities in 1812, since the North Hotin, Acherman and the southern Ismail were given up in 1940 by the Soviet authorities to Ukraine. Due to the restructuring process that started in the Central and Eastern Europe, in June 1990 Moldova proclaimed its sovereignty, and on August 27, 1991 – its State Independence. In March 2, 1992, the Republic of Moldova became a member of the United Nations.

West Chilcotin Tourism Association
The Vision Statement of the WCTA: "To support the vision of a vibrant, healthy, sustainable quality wilderness destination that retains the values and atmosphere that makes our region uniquely CHILCOTIN". In the heart of Super Natural BC lies one of the last true wilderness regions of the world. From the vast eastern reaches of the Chilcotin is Ts'yl-os Provincial Park, the Redstone, Puntzi, Tatla and Nemaiah areas. To the south lies Mystery Mtn. (Mt. Waddington, the highest mountain in BC) and the Chilcotin and Coast Ranges, with the latter being home to the most heavily glaciated sub-polar mountain range on earth. To the west lies Tweedsmuir Provincial with famous Lonesome Lake and Hunlen Falls (North America's 3rd highest) and the Anahim Volcanic Belt with the Rainbow Mtns. To the north lies the Itcha/Ilgachuz Park with BC's largest herd of mountain caribou and the Ootsa-Blackwater region through which Alexander MacKenzie traveled in 1793. The West Chilcotin nurtures the headwaters to such rivers as the Dean, Atnarko, Blackwater, Kleena Kleene, Homathko, Taseko, Chilcotin and Chilko. All support good populations of rainbow trout. The Chilcotin region is serviced by BC Ferries Discovery Coast Ferry (Route 40) during the summer, by air with Pacific Coastal Airlines offering a regular scheduled flight from the South Terminal at Vancouver Airport to Anahim Lake and by road via Highway 20 from Williams Lake to Bella Coola. This spectacular region offers accommodation from rustic Chilcotin through world class, all with our famous "Chilcotin Hospitality". Whether you're looking for a destination vacation, or a circle tour, check out our members below, you'll be glad you did. Welcome to The West Chilcotin!
