Wicomico County Department of Recreation, Parks and Tourism
It has been said that in small and rural communities that the arts are not a noun but an active verb. That's certainly true in Wicomico County, Maryland! "Home grown" arts are most valued in this community, and imported professional arts presentations are constantly expanding. The range of cultural activities is wide, encompassing visual and performing arts, historic preservation as well as community celebrations. The Salisbury Wicomico Arts Council, founded in 1967 as the first arts council organized in Maryland, represents and promotes the cultural life of the County. The oldest continuously operating community theatre in Maryland, Community Players of Salisbury, is here, alongside the world-renowned Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art, where the craft of decoy carving that Lem and Steve Ward turned into an art form, is showcased. Summer Sunday evenings are reminiscent of a living Norman Rockwell painting when one visits Salisbury Park to hear the Salisbury Community Band play as the day turns to twilight. The Eastern Shore Ballet Theatre performs twice annually and the Art Institute & Gallery in downtown Salisbury offers a rotating array of exhibits and educational classes. The Chipman Cultural Center was originally a church built by the community's free blacks before the Civil War. It became the first church for African-Americans on the Delmarva Peninsula and is now an active cultural center as well as a museum repository for African-American artifacts. Salisbury University serves as a home to numerous performing troupes and to several art galleries. The Salisbury Symphony Orchestra, Salisbury University Dance Company, WSCL-FM (an NPR affiliate with a classical music focus at 89.5FM) and the Bobbi Biron Theatre program provide a diverse set of performance opportunities for visitors. For specific performance information at Salisbury University, call 410-543-6030. Preservation of local history is important in Wicomico County. There are several delightful walking tours that can be taken as an enjoyable way to view glimpses of life from America's past. Restored grand Victorian homes (some with 16 rooms a piece) can be seen in Newtown in Salisbury. The historic district of Newtown (so named because it was the new town built after devastating fires destroyed most of Salisbury in 1860 and then again in 1886) is bracketed by Poplar Hill Mansion, which dates back to 1800, and the Chipman Cultural Center. Pemberton Hall (built in 1741 as the home of Salisbury's founder, Colonel Issac Handy), Whitehaven Village (where Eda Ferber, taken with the stories of the traveling salesmen who traveled up and down the Wicomico River) was inspired to write "Show Boat"), and Quantico Village all provide delightful day trips within Wicomico County. Community festivals abound in Wicomico County. A strong volunteer spirit guides the outdoor spring, summer and fall festivals as well as the indoor winter festivals. The Salisbury Festival, held on the first weekend of May, celebrates the beginning of the summer for the community. The Delmarva Chicken Festival rotates amongst several Delmarva locations and showcases the agri-business roots of the Delmarva Peninsula. Many of the winter festivals are held at the Wicomico Youth and Civic Center, which is also a War Memorial commemorating the contributions of American's military veterans. The Civic Center is also the site for large cultural attractions including concerts and family events that come to the region. Plenty of other cultural attractions await you in Wicomico County. Be sure to take a look at the area attractions, upcoming concerts and events and special events pages for more information!
